Introducing Literature & Libations, the mobile bookstore enriching Virginia’s literary scene
Independent bookstores serve as vital parts of their communities. They foster culture and community spirit, create local jobs and tax revenue, uplift literacy and education, advocate for underrepresented authors, and connect readers to books in a genuine, personal manner while supporting the fundamental right to read.
Every week we highlight an independent bookstore, showcasing what makes each one distinct and offering their unique book suggestions.
This week we shine the spotlight on Literature & Libations located in Portsmouth, Virginia!
Can you tell us about your store’s background?
Established in 2022 by Kierra Underwood, our mobile independent bookstore is devoted to Black literature. We provide a thoughtfully picked range of books authored by Black writers directly into our communities. As a Black-owned and LGBTQIA+ supportive business, we prioritize empowerment, community, authenticity, and growth. Our charming mobile bookstore travels across the Hampton Roads Region and along the East Coast, promoting cultural exchange and celebrating the diverse voices of the Black community through literature, art, and engaging events.
What sets your independent bookstore apart?
What makes our bookstore unique is our dedication to highlighting Black voices with a curated selection of literature and our mobile approach that brings these cultural gems straight to the people. Our customers appreciate our focus on diverse Black authors and narratives, often bringing attention to literature that may not be readily available in conventional bookstores.
We take great pride in our ability to inspire significant conversations and connections within our community. Our bookstore transcends mere book sales; it is a vibrant space for sharing knowledge and stories, encouraging personal and collective growth. Our commitment to authenticity and creating an inclusive atmosphere has turned us into a beloved gathering place and a beacon of empowerment in our community.
What is your favorite section of the store?
Our favorite part of our mobile bookstore is the “Featured Voices” section, which dynamically showcases the creations of both emerging and well-established Black authors. This area is the soul of our mobile store, constantly evolving to spotlight different themes, genres, and authors that illustrate the richness and diversity of Black literature. It’s a place for customers to discover new gems and reconnect with classic voices, offering an up-close and personal experience with the narratives and ideas that shape the Black community. Our mobile format, which is adaptable without fixed sections, enables us to respond to current events and community interests, ensuring each visit is distinctive and engaging.
Which book do you believe deserves more recognition and why?
“I’m Not Yelling: A Black Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Workplace (Successful Black Business Women)” by Elizabeth Leiba is a vital read for all Black women in corporate environments who may feel misunderstood, frustrated, or ignored. It resonates strongly with many.
What’s the importance of supporting local independent bookstores?
Purchasing from these local bookstores boosts community economies and encourages a unique cultural exchange by emphasizing diverse narratives, especially in Black literature. It creates a nurturing community atmosphere that values authentic stories and voices.
This initiative fosters connections while enhancing the growth and visibility of Black authors and creators.
