No. 3 Iowa State basketball faces surprising defeat at home against Kansas State

AMES, Iowa.— After a lengthy period of home victories, the Iowa State basketball team was shocked by a loss on their own court.

Kansas State (10-11, 4-6 Big 12), arriving at Saturday’s game in Ames without a win in any away games this season, surprised the third-ranked Cyclones with a score of 80-61.

This defeat marks the end of Iowa State’s impressive 29-game winning streak at Hilton Coliseum.

Kansas State has now become the first team with a losing record to defeat a top-5 ranked team in the AP poll by a margin of 15 or more points, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

Tamin Lipsey led the Cyclones (17-4, 7-3 Big 12) with 20 points, while Curtis Jones contributed 14 points but struggled with his shooting in the second half, finishing 1-of-10. Joshua Jefferson added 13 points.

The Cyclones shot 36.5% overall (19-of-52) and 44.4% from three-point range (8-of-18). However, they only managed 27.3% shooting in the second half, including a mere 22.2% from beyond the arc, and committed 18 turnovers throughout the game.

As frustration grew among the Cyclones, Kawhi State gained momentum, leading to Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger receiving his first technical foul of the season. Moments later, Kansas State’s Brendan Hausen knocked down a three-pointer, capping a 20-4 run in the second half that pushed the Wildcats to a 58-39 lead with 13:45 left on the clock.

Hausen celebrated by raising his arms, while the once-boisterous Hilton Coliseum fell eerily silent.

The Cyclones managed to refocus and initiated a 13-0 run, narrowing the score to 58-52 following a three-point play by Gilbert with 10:06 left in the contest.

Though it seemed as if Iowa State and their supporters were re-energized, that would be the closest they would get to Kansas State from that point on.

Hausen responded with another three-pointer, igniting an 8-0 run for the Wildcats. Once Kansas State established a double-digit advantage again, they maintained that lead for the rest of the game.

Every starter for Kansas State scored in double digits during the match. Dug McDaniel led the team with 20 points and five assists, while Coleman Hawkins added 17 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Hausen contributed 15 points and three steals, with Max Jones adding 12 points, and David N’Guessan scoring 10 points.

Kansas State held a slim lead of 37-35 at halftime. Iowa State started the game strong with a 13-4 streak, but then struggled with turnovers.

At one point, the Cyclones made seven turnovers within just over five minutes, allowing Kansas State to regroup and start their comeback. The Wildcats were also effective on the offensive boards, giving them several second-chance scoring opportunities.

Although Iowa State tightened its ball control towards the end of the first half, they primarily scored by drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line, which helped them stay close to Kansas State before ultimately being outscored 43-26 in the second half.

The Cyclones will hit the road again on Monday night for a rematch against Kansas. Iowa State previously defeated Kansas on January 15, winning 74-57 at Hilton Coliseum. The game is set to begin at 8 p.m. CT.
