Italian Village Invites Americans with $1 Homes to Start Anew After Elections

An Italian Village is Offering $1 Homes to Americans Post-Election

A picturesque village in Italy is inviting Americans to consider moving there after the 2024 presidential election.

Situated in Sardinia, the historic town of Ollolai has introduced the “Live in Ollolai” program, which provides homes at incredibly affordable rates – some costing as little as a cup of coffee – for Americans who feel fatigued by global politics and want a simpler way of life, as highlighted on the village’s website.

“We can’t mention the recent U.S. president by name, but it’s clear that many Americans are eager to escape his leadership,” stated Mayor Francesco Columbo during an interview with CNN. “This website is specifically tailored to support those looking to relocate after the elections.”

Ollolai has experienced a significant population decline over recent decades, with numbers falling from 2,013 in 1981 to 1,162 in 2024.

Although Ollolai isn’t located near the popular beaches that Sardinia is famous for, it is surrounded by lush forests and situated on the slopes of Monte San Basilio. The town, which has roots dating back to 594 A.D., is renowned for its traditional basket weaving art, known as S’Istrumpa. According to the village’s website, “Ollolai offers a unique chance to enjoy nature, delicious local cuisine, and a community steeped in ancient customs, making it an ideal spot to reconnect, rejuvenate, and adopt a new lifestyle.”

Prospective movers can select from various homes, with prices starting at just €1 (approximately $1.06) for properties needing renovation, reaching up to around €100,000 (about $105,973) for homes that are ready to move into. The village plans to display the available properties online soon. Additionally, qualified digital nomads will be offered free temporary accommodation, according to Columbo’s comments on CNN.

Since moving can often be a complex and lengthy process, the village promises to assist with every phase of the relocation, from scheduling property viewings to connecting with contractors and managing required paperwork.

This isn’t the first initiative Ollolai has launched to attract expatriates through low-cost housing options. In 2018, the village introduced a program where individuals could purchase abandoned houses for €1, provided they committed to spending about $25,000 on renovations within a three-year timeframe. After five years, buyers were free to sell their renovated homes.

Last year, a program for digital nomads was created where eligible remote workers could receive accommodations for a nominal fee in exchange for contributing to the local community. According to a press release from August 2024, more than 18,000 applications were submitted for this program.

“While this isn’t a complete solution to the issues of depopulation, it helps to break down barriers, foster the sharing of knowledge and experiences within the community, and promote awareness of the area,” the statement concluded.
