Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio arrested for DUI
Jack Del Rio, the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders, was arrested last week for driving under the influence, as detailed in a report from the Madison (Wisconsin) Police Department.
Following the incident, Del Rio will step down from his position as a senior adviser for the University of Wisconsin football team, as announced by Badgers head coach Luke Fickell.
“He has decided to resign and move on,” Fickell informed reporters on Monday. “It’s a difficult situation, and it’s important for everyone to take accountability for their actions. Jack will do just that, and we will keep progressing.”
In the early hours of Friday, around 12:30 a.m., Del Rio crashed his vehicle into a street sign and damaged a fence before stopping in a yard.
According to the report, witnesses pointed out Del Rio, who was seen leaving the wreck. At 61 years old, he displayed signs of being under the influence and admitted to the officers that he was driving. He now faces a first-offense DUI charge and has been released.
Del Rio expressed gratitude to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin, stating, “I’m thankful for the chance to work alongside such an excellent coaching staff and talented young athletes.”
He continued, “I’ve opted to step back from my role with the team, allowing them to concentrate fully on the remainder of the season.”
Coaching the Jaguars from 2003 to 2011, Del Rio had a record of 68-71 and reached the playoffs twice before being let go after Week 12 in his final season.
Afterward, the Denver Broncos brought him on as their defensive coordinator for three years until he was again named head coach of the Raiders (2015-17). He led the Raiders to the playoffs in 2016, but a disappointing 6-10 record the following year resulted in his firing.
Most recently, Del Rio served as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders under Ron Rivera for four seasons (2020-24) before being released before the end of that season.
Del Rio has also played in the NFL for a decade after finishing his college football career at Southern California.
