Injury Update on Jaden Ivey: Pistons Guard Suffers Broken Left Fibula Against the Magic
Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey has sustained a broken fibula in his left leg, as confirmed by a source to the Detroit Free Press, which is part of the YSL News Network. This is a major setback for the 22-year-old, who has been enjoying a standout season.
A spokesperson for the Pistons informed the Free Press that the team will release an official injury update later. ESPN was the first to report the injury news.
Ivey sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s home victory over the Orlando Magic, finishing the game with 22 points and hitting 5 of 6 attempts from three-point range. The timeline for his recovery is currently unclear, but initial assessments indicate no further damage to ligaments or tendons, as per a team source.
“It’s tough on the whole group,” said Pistons guard Cade Cunningham following the game regarding Ivey’s injury. “Seeing him in pain is difficult for us. He’s strong and will bounce back, knowing his determination. He will work hard and come back even better. It’s definitely hard to witness.”
Pistons Affected by Ivey’s Leg Injury
Ausar Thompson was seen tearing up on the bench, while Magic guard Cole Anthony, who collided with Ivey while going for a loose ball, also appeared emotional next to Ivey during the evaluation of his injury by trainers.
After Ivey left the game, the Pistons gathered for a brief prayer before continuing to play.
“We prayed for him, and just wanted to gather our thoughts and ensure everyone understood our focus moving forward,” Cunningham mentioned. “We aimed to start the new year right on January 1. Witnessing that happen was tough, and we wanted to make sure everyone was aligned with our mission.”
In Ivey’s absence, the Pistons achieved a victory surpassing their win total of the 2023-24 season, defeating the Magic 105-96.
“They genuinely care for one another and concern for JI and the contributions he’s made for this team alongside their personal development,” said coach J.B. Bickerstaff. “They rallied together, knowing that’s what he would have wanted.”
Who Will Step In for Jaden Ivey?
Ivey’s injury presents several challenges for the team’s lineup. Coach Bickerstaff has previously staggered the playing time of Cunningham and Ivey, ensuring one is on the court at all times. Ivey serves as the team’s secondary playmaker and takes on point guard duties when Cunningham is resting.
With Ivey out, second-year guard Marcus Sasser will be the only backup option for Cunningham.
“It’s difficult for all of us,” Bickerstaff stated. “No one is a better teammate and person than JI. He is incredibly dedicated to the team, and it’s hard to see him like this.”
