Trent Baalke no longer Jaguars general manager after owner Shad Khan’s sudden change of mind
Trent Baalke will not be guiding the Jacksonville Jaguars into their next phase.
The organization announced on Wednesday that it has decided to part ways with its general manager, just over two weeks after revealing that Baalke would remain while head coach Doug Pederson would be let go.
“After several discussions with Trent Baalke this week, we concluded it would be best for both parties to part ways respectfully, effective immediately,” stated owner Shad Khan. “I extend my sincere gratitude to Trent for his contributions over the past five seasons.”
Ethan Waugh will take over as interim general manager, according to Khan.
This announcement coincides with reports that Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen has backed out of the running for the Jaguars’ coaching position. Coen was supposed to interview again with the Jaguars this week, along with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
The Jaguars also missed out on former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who interviewed with Jacksonville on January 11 but chose to accept the head coach position with the Chicago Bears.
Initially, Khan had defended his choice to keep Baalke, expressing skepticism towards the idea that the franchise needed a complete overhaul.
“What constitutes a complete overhaul of the franchise?” Khan questioned during a Zoom call with the media. “Player health and wellness, medical statistics, analysis, scouting, and contract management have all seen considerable improvements over the last four or five years. To change all of that would be nearly catastrophic.”
Baalke joined the Jaguars in 2020 as the director of player personnel. He became interim general manager after David Caldwell was let go in November 2020 and was later confirmed in the role as a full-time position.
The Jaguars ended the 2024 season with a disappointing 4-13 record, following Khan’s earlier statements that this was “the best team ever assembled by the Jacksonville Jaguars.”
After parting ways with Pederson, Khan voiced concerns regarding the strategies used in gameplay, remarking, “we have become the most predictable team on both sides of the ball.”
