Janet Jackson’s Representatives Clarify: No Authorization for Apology Regarding Kamala Harris Remarks

Janet Jackson denies authorized apology regarding comments on Kamala Harris’ race

Jackson’s representatives claim the apology given was not approved by the singer.

Following a wave of criticism for her remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris, Janet Jackson is retracting an apology that was reportedly issued in her name.

In an interview with The Guardian released Saturday, Jackson discussed Harris’ biracial background. When asked about the possibility of the U.S. having its first “Black female president,” she expressed skepticism regarding Harris’ racial identity.

“Well, you know what they allegedly said?” Jackson remarked. “She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”

She further stated: “I was told that they found out her father is white.”

Harris has a diverse heritage, being born to Shyamala Gopalan from India and Donald Harris, a Jamaican economic advisor. Gopalan passed away in 2009, having made significant contributions as a breast cancer researcher.

Jackson’s remarks mirrored comments made by former President Donald Trump, who questioned Harris’ identity during a July event at the National Association of Black Journalists convention. He stated he “didn’t know (Harris) was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black.”

“Is she Indian or is she Black? Because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and became a Black person,” Trump had said at that event.

Representatives confirm Janet Jackson did not authorize apology for Harris comments

Shortly after Jackson’s comments surfaced, an apology was made by Mo Elmasri, an Egyptian filmmaker who has claimed to be working as a creative consultant for Jackson, to Buzzfeed.

Elmasri, who called himself Jackson’s manager, indicated that her statements regarding Harris’ racial identity were “based on misinformation.”

Jackson’s official manager is her brother, Randy Jackson, her representatives informed YSL News on Sunday. They clarified that Elmasri was not authorized to speak on her behalf to Buzzfeed and has never been part of her team.

YSL News has reached out to Randy Jackson for further comments.

Elmasri is recognized as an executive producer for the upcoming series “Janet Jackson: Family First,” which is currently in production, based on his IMDb profile.

Janet Jackson faces social media backlash over comments about Kamala Harris

Jackson’s remarks about Harris prompted significant backlash online.

“The Janet Jackson situation highlights how harmful misinformation can be,” @sjs856 commented on X. “If you can look at Kamala Harris and honestly believe she has a white parent 😐 I’m at a loss for words.”

“Seems like Janet Jackson is living in a bubble,” @Forever_Dusk remarked alongside a clip of Harris stating, “OK, so there’s some education that needs to be done. I can see that.”

“This whole Janet Jackson incident just shows how disconnected some celebrities are,” @AJLaJoya expressed. “I’ve always admired her, but repeating falsehoods!? Smh. If you’re not knowledgeable on a topic, it’s best not to comment on it especially with your reach. Please educate yourself!”
