Jennifer Lopez Gets Emotional at Sundance Premiere of ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’: ‘This Means So Much’

Jennifer Lopez moved to tears during ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ premiere at Sundance: ‘It’s a significant moment’

Five years after being notably overlooked for her role in “Hustlers,” could Jennifer Lopez be on the verge of her first Oscar nomination?

The 55-year-old “Jenny From the Block” singer was visibly emotional during the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday when her new musical film “Kiss of the Spider Woman” received a warm standing ovation, as reported by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

Lopez shared with the audience that starring in a musical has been a lifelong aspiration.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” she expressed. “Musicals are so important to me; I was inspired by my mom, who would have me watch ‘West Side Story’ on TV every Thanksgiving.”

With tears in her eyes, the “Marry Me” actress continued, “I was completely captivated, and I thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ This has always been my dream, and now I finally got the chance to fulfill it. So it’s truly significant.”

She also expressed gratitude to the film’s director, Bill Condon, thanking him for “making my dream come true.”

In “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Lopez takes on the role of film star Ingrid Luna, in a story about prisoners in Argentina that is adapted from a stage musical, which in turn is based on a 1976 novel. William Hurt won an Oscar for best actor for his part in a 1985 film adaptation, which received a best picture nomination as well.

Initial reviews from Sundance have praised Lopez highly, with The Hollywood Reporter calling her performance “one of the best of her career,” while Deadline stated it was a role she was destined to play.

When asked by Variety about the speculation surrounding an Oscar nomination, Lopez remarked that she didn’t “even want to start that conversation” but added, “Of course, I would love for it to receive the recognition it truly deserves.”

Back in 2019, Lopez garnered a lot of Oscar buzz for her performance in “Hustlers,” leading to nominations at the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards. However, she was ultimately left out when the Oscar nominations were announced, a decision that critics deemed one of the biggest disappointments of that year.

In a 2021 interview with Allure, Lopez reflected on how “it was painful” not to receive an Oscar nomination.

“I thought, ‘Okay, if everyone else believes I should be nominated and I’m not, what does that mean? Is it all just a façade?'” she shared. “‘Are the other accolades valid while this one isn’t?’ I came to the realization that I do this because I love it, not to line my shelves with Oscars or Grammys.'”

Lopez also discussed this Oscar snub in her 2022 documentary “Halftime.”

“I genuinely believed I would be nominated,” she revealed in the film. “I allowed myself to get hopeful, as so many people were saying I would be, and then when it didn’t happen, it was quite a letdown.”
