Jennifer Lopez gets emotional at ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ premiere at Sundance: ‘It means so much’
After five years since she was notoriously overlooked for “Hustlers,” is Jennifer Lopez on the path to her first Oscar nomination?
At the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, the 55-year-old “Jenny From the Block” singer shed tears as her latest musical, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” received a warm standing ovation, as reported by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
Lopez shared with the audience that her dream has always been to be part of a musical. “This is something I’ve wished for my entire life,” she expressed. “My love for musicals started because my mom would have me watch ‘West Side Story’ every Thanksgiving when it aired on TV.”
Getting emotional, the “Marry Me” actress continued, “I was completely captivated and thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ It’s been my lifelong ambition, and at last, I have the chance to pursue it. This is a huge moment for me.”
She also expressed her gratitude to the film’s director, Bill Condon, for “making my dream a reality.”
In “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Lopez plays the character Ingrid Luna, a film star in this adaptation of a stage musical about prisoners in Argentina, which is based on a novel from 1976. William Hurt won an Oscar for best actor for his role in the 1985 movie adaptation, which also received a best picture nomination.
Initial reviews from Sundance have praised Lopez’s performance, with The Hollywood Reporter stating it’s “one of the finest roles of her career,” while Deadline noted it’s a role she was destined to portray.
When asked about the potential Oscar buzz, Lopez told Variety she preferred not to dive into the subject but added, “Naturally, I’d love for this project to receive the recognition I believe it deserves.”
In 2019, Lopez garnered significant Oscar buzz for her role in “Hustlers,” leading to nominations from the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards. However, she was ultimately left out of the Oscar nominations, a decision critics viewed as one of the most surprising snubs that year.
Reflecting on the snub in a 2021 interview with Allure, she admitted it was “a sting” not to receive an Oscar nomination. “I thought, ‘Okay, if everyone expects you to be nominated and you’re not, what does that mean? Is it all a facade?'” she recalled. “Eventually, I realized, ‘This isn’t why I do this. I’m not in it for a collection of Oscars or Grammys.'”
Lopez also discussed the Oscar snub in her 2022 documentary “Halftime.”
“I truly believed I would be nominated,” she confessed in the film. “I allowed myself to get hopeful, as so many people were telling me I would be, and then it just didn’t happen.”
