Jennifer Lopez Seeks to Revert to Her Maiden Name Following Ben Affleck Split, Court Documents Reveal

After Divorce from Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez Requests to Revert to Her Maiden Name

As she navigates her divorce from Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez is seeking a judge’s approval to revert to her maiden name.

In a divorce petition obtained by YSL News on Thursday, Lopez, who has been legally recognized as Jennifer Lynn Affleck since her marriage to the “Argo” star in 2022, requested that her name be changed back to Jennifer Lynn Lopez.

The 55-year-old singer filed for divorce from 52-year-old Affleck in Los Angeles on Tuesday, exactly two years after their wedding ceremony at Affleck’s property near Savannah, Georgia.

According to the documents, Lopez submitted the request without a lawyer’s assistance and noted that their marriage, which took place in a Las Vegas chapel on July 16, 2022, ended with their separation on April 26.

Lopez attributed the reason for their divorce to “irreconcilable differences.” She also asked the court not to award spousal support to either party and requested that both pay their own legal fees.

She signed the paperwork on Monday. This divorce marks Affleck’s second marriage and Lopez’s fourth. They were previously engaged twice: once in 2002 and again in 2021.

YSL News has reached out to representatives of both Lopez and Affleck for their thoughts on the situation.

Lopez’s divorce petition followed months of speculation from fans and the media, as she and Affleck were seen attending events separately. Although they were married for only two years, their romantic history dates back to 2002 when they met during the filming of “Gigli,” while Lopez was still married to her second spouse, Cris Judd.

Affleck and Lopez got engaged that year, but they ended their relationship in January 2004, citing excessive media attention. After Lopez’s engagement to former MLB player Alex Rodriguez ended in April 2021, the couple known as “Bennifer” was spotted together multiple times, leading to rumors of rekindled romance. By July 2021, Lopez publicly confirmed her relationship with Affleck on Instagram for her 52nd birthday.

Jennifer Lopez’s Choice to Take Ben Affleck’s Last Name

In a Vogue cover story from 2022, Lopez addressed the backlash over her decision to take on her husband’s surname.

“People will still refer to me as Jennifer Lopez, but legally I will be Mrs. Affleck because we are united,” she stated. “We are husband and wife, and I take pride in that. I see no issue with it.”

Regarding the idea of Affleck adopting her surname, she dismissed the notion as “unconventional,” claiming it lacked “romance.”

“I am very much in charge of my own choices and future, and I feel empowered as a woman and as an individual. I understand that different opinions exist about this, and I respect that,” Lopez reflected.

She continued, “But if you’re asking my perspective, I believe it’s romantic. It embodies tradition and romance, which resonates with me, and perhaps I am just that type of person.”
