Reports indicate Jets will appoint Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach
The New York Jets are moving forward with their rebuilding process.
According to various sources, the Jets are set to hire Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, as their new head coach.
Glenn, aged 52, interviewed again with the Jets in person on Tuesday, only three days after the Lions were knocked out in the divisional round playoffs, which allowed their coaching staff to be available for new opportunities. He was also scheduled for a second interview with the New Orleans Saints later this week according to multiple reports.
As a former NFL cornerback, Glenn will now take the helm of the Jets, the franchise where he played from 1994 to 2001 and where he earned two of his three Pro Bowl selections.
He is the second Lions coach to leave for a prominent position this week, following Ben Johnson’s deal with the Chicago Bears on Monday.
During his time in Detroit, Glenn led a tenacious defense that finished seventh in points allowed in 2024, even with significant player injuries that left 12 players from his unit on injured reserve by season’s end.
His defensive approach, which emphasizes man coverage and aggressive blitzing, is expected to transition well to New York, where standout players like cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams are on the roster. However, despite ranking third in yards allowed for a second year in a row, the Jets’ defense placed 20th in points allowed, showing a decline after Jeff Ulbrich stepped in as interim coach following Robert Saleh’s firing.
The Jets wrapped up the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, extending their record-long playoff drought to 14 years.
The Jets are still looking for a general manager after parting ways with Joe Douglas in November.
One of the main questions Glenn will face is whether veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be included in the team’s plans for 2025. While Rodgers is still under contract, he has hinted at uncertainty regarding his future with the team.
“I think everyone recognizes that it will depend on the GM, coach, and me — whether we all want to collaborate or if it’s simply not meant to be,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show” last week.
