Texans RB Joe Mixon urges NFL to ‘back up your words’ on hip-drop tackle rule
Joe Mixon, running back for the Houston Texans, has voiced his frustration along with other NFL players regarding the league’s implementation of a new rule this season that prohibits the hip-drop tackle.
Mixon sustained an injury in the Texans’ 19-13 victory against the Chicago Bears when linebacker T.J. Edwards landed on Mixon’s ankle early in the third quarter. He briefly left the game for treatment but returned later, although he played only an additional seven snaps throughout the remainder of the game.
No penalty was issued for Edwards’ tackle, which led Mixon to express his discontent on social media after the match: “The NFL and NFLPA created this rule and emphasized it for a reason. It’s time for them to show they mean it.”
After reviewing the play, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters on Monday that he believed the tackle qualified as a violation.
“In my view, it definitely fits the description of a hip-drop tackle,” Ryans stated. “When the defender removes weight and then puts all their weight onto the runner’s legs, it’s clear why they want to eliminate the hip-drop tackle from the game, as it leads to numerous injuries.”
Mixon is not alone in his disappointment regarding the enforcement of the new rule in Week 2.
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase received a significant 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during a 26-25 defeat against Kansas City for voicing his concerns to officials about what he later called an illegal hip-drop tackle.
When the NFL enforced the ban on the swivel hip-drop tackle this past spring for safety reasons, many players, coaches, and even the NFL Players Association expressed concerns about how this tactic would be called during games.
After witnessing the first two weeks of the regular season, those worries appear to be valid.
