Johnny Manziel Stirs Nostalgia: Compares Vanderbilt’s Upset of Alabama to 2012 Triumph

Johnny Manziel surprises Diego Pavia, likening Vanderbilt’s upset of Alabama to his 2012 win

Vanderbilt’s quarterback Diego Pavia is being compared to Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel after he led the Commodores to a stunning 40-35 victory over the then-2nd ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

This impressive performance even caught Manziel’s attention.

“Watching it all unfold… reminds me a lot of 2012,” Manziel shared with Pavia during an ESPN interview, surprising the young quarterback.

Back in 2012, Manziel made headlines by winning the Heisman Trophy after guiding the Texas A&M Aggies to a 29–24 triumph against the No. 1 Crimson Tide, racking up 345 total yards and two touchdowns in the process. Similarly, Pavia stood out with his performance, completing 16 of 20 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, along with 20 carries for 56 yards. This marked Vanderbilt’s first win against Alabama since 1984.

Pavia expressed that Manziel is his favorite quarterback, noting their similar styles of play.

“We both bring an exciting energy to the game,” Pavia stated. “We’re confident in our abilities, and I feel like—I’ve yet to speak with Johnny (Manziel)—but we have a different mindset. We’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

Pavia didn’t have to wait long to connect with his idol. Manziel joined the broadcast, causing Pavia to grin and say, “Oh wow!” Manziel then praised Pavia, commenting, “What an incredible game. It was thrilling to watch. I’m so happy for you… thank you for showing me love, and I hope I can return the favor soon.”

Pavia invited Manziel to attend a Vanderbilt game, saying, “We’re putting on quite a show down here.” Manziel responded affirmatively, “I’ll try to come and see you guys in Nashville. You all have been having a fantastic season.”

As they wrapped up their conversation, Manziel offered Pavia some words of encouragement ahead of their upcoming game against Kentucky: “Harness that energy from your recent win and enjoy the ride.”
