Jonathan Owens Sparks Bears’ Season with Pivotal Blocked Punt Return Touchdown

Jonathan Owens makes history with Bears’ first touchdown of the season from a blocked punt

Simone Biles isn’t the only one in her family achieving great things right now.

Jonathan Owens picked up a blocked punt during a game on Sunday and rushed it back for a touchdown, marking the Chicago Bears’ first scoring play of the season. This also stands as the second touchdown of Owens’ football career; he previously scored off a fumble recovery while with the Green Bay Packers in last year’s Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Owens’ wife, Simone Biles, who tied the knot with him in April 2023, quickly shared her excitement. “My heart,” the seven-time Olympic champion posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This touchdown provided a significant boost to the Bears, who were struggling in the much-anticipated first game with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. The first overall pick in this year’s NFL draft completed 8 out of 14 passes for 54 yards in the first half against the Tennessee Titans, as the Bears fell behind 17-3.

Owens’ third-quarter touchdown ignited a Chicago comeback, culminating in a 24-17 victory. After Daniel Hardy successfully blocked a punt from Ryan Stonehouse, Owens recovered the ball at the Tennessee 21-yard line and dashed into the end zone, narrowing Tennessee’s lead to 17-10.

Owens joined the Bears during the offseason, and his support for Biles was a central theme during this season’s Hard Knocks series. The team allowed him to take a break from training camp to attend the Olympics in Paris to cheer for Biles. He was there to witness her and the U.S. women’s team secure the gold medal, and he also was present when she became just the third woman ever to win back-to-back Olympic all-around titles two days later.

After Owens returned to Chicago, Biles went on to claim gold in the vault and a silver medal in the floor exercise, bringing her total Olympic medal count to 11.

While Williams had a few commendable passes in his first half, he also struggled with overthrows, particularly on third downs. This included a third-and-5 attempt from the Tennessee 6 during Chicago’s last possession of the first half. Despite starting the drive with excellent field position following a 66-yard kickoff return by DeAndre Carter, Biles and her teammates faltered and had to settle for a 24-yard field goal from Cairo Santos after a 13-yard gain from D.J. Moore on the second play.

Williams concluded the match with a record of 14 completions on 29 attempts for 93 yards, and he added 15 rushing yards from five carries.
