Jordan Chiles speaks out on Olympic bronze medal dispute: ‘Feels unfair’
U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles has publicly addressed the rejection of her appeal regarding the decision that took away her bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, stating that the outcome “feels unfair” and highlighting the “racially motivated harassment” she has faced online.
On Thursday, Chiles shared her thoughts through a social media post.
“I am deeply touched by the outpouring of support I have received recently. I want to express my sincere gratitude to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, USAG, and the USOPC for their steadfast backing during this challenging time,” she wrote. “While I was celebrating my Olympic achievements, I was informed that my bronze medal had been revoked. I had hope in the appeal made by USAG, backed by clear evidence that my score adhered to all regulations. Unfortunately, this appeal did not succeed.
“I am at a loss for words. This outcome feels unfair and is a major setback not only for me but for all those who have supported my journey. To make matters worse, the racist attacks targeting me on social media are unacceptable and incredibly painful,” she continued. “I have dedicated my everything to this sport, and I take great pride in representing my heritage and my nation.”
Chiles indicated that she is facing one of the toughest challenges of her career and is committed to making “every effort to ensure that justice prevails.”
“I trust that in the end, those responsible will do the right thing,” she stated.
Chiles earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise event during the Olympics after her coaches raised a query about her score to the judges.
Currently, Chiles is not required to return the bronze medal, since U.S. officials have announced plans to challenge the ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which cited “significant procedural errors” in taking away her score. Despite U.S. officials presenting clear video evidence demonstrating her rightful claim to the bronze medal, CAS has stated it cannot reopen the case.
A Romanian gymnast, Ana Barbosu, originally placed fourth in the floor exercise, but was later awarded the bronze medal. The International Olympic Committee announced on Thursday morning that Romania is permitted to present Barbosu with a bronze medal, which Romanian officials have confirmed will take place in a medal ceremony on Friday.
