Bills QB Josh Allen Named 2024 NFL MVP Over Lamar Jackson
Josh Allen has triumphed over Lamar Jackson once again. This time, it’s not just on the field, but in the race for the league’s most prestigious honor.
At the NFL Honors event in New Orleans on Thursday, Allen was awarded the 2024 NFL Most Valuable Player title, securing 27 first-place votes compared to Jackson’s 23.
This marks Allen’s first MVP award after previously finishing as runner-up to Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and placing third in 2022 and fifth in 2023. He joins O.J. Simpson (1973) and Thurman Thomas (1991) as the third player from the Bills franchise to receive this accolade.
Allen also made history by being the first player since John Elway of the Denver Broncos in 1987 to win the MVP award while not being named to the first-team All-Pro list. Jackson earned that distinction, with Allen listed on the second team. Notably, Steve McNair was also a second-team All-Pro when he shared the MVP title with Peyton Manning in 2003.
Following the announcement, Allen expressed his surprise at the outcome.
“Honestly, I was quite shocked,” Allen remarked. “Given the usual patterns, Lamar surely deserved this recognition as well. I hold him and his skills in the highest regard.”
In his seventh season, Allen amassed 3,731 passing yards with 28 touchdown throws and set a career-low with just six interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 531 yards and scored 12 times on the ground.
Despite a turbulent offseason in which the Bills let go of key players like Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, Allen propelled his team to a 13-4 record, securing the second seed in the AFC. The Bills triumphed over the Denver Broncos in the wild-card round and narrowly defeated the Ravens in the divisional round, before facing disappointment against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game.
