Poll shows Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump in 5 battleground states, with a tie in Georgia
WASHINGTON — A new poll released Wednesday indicates that Kamala Harris is either leading or tied with Donald Trump in six out of seven critical battleground states, effectively reversing the earlier leads Trump had after Joe Biden exited the race last month.
A survey from the Cook Political Report covering seven key swing states shows Harris ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Arizona, while the race is tied in Georgia. Nevada remains the only state where Trump holds a lead, as revealed by the poll.
Conducted by the Democratic polling firm BSG and the Republican polling firm GS Strategy Group, the poll’s margin of error varies by state, ranging from +/- 4.7 to 4.9 percentage points. In three states—Arizona, Michigan, and North Carolina—Harris’s leads fall within this margin.
This poll implies that several routes to garnering the 270 electoral votes needed for victory have opened for Harris, the current vice president and Democratic nominee, particularly after Biden’s challenges in Sun Belt states like Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and North Carolina compelled his campaign to focus more on the traditionally Democratic “blue wall” states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Previously, Trump had led Biden in six out of the seven battleground states and was tied in Wisconsin, as per a survey conducted by the same pollsters in May. The new survey shows that Harris has successfully solidified the Democratic base, with 91% of those who voted for Biden in 2020 now indicating they will support Harris, a notable increase from the 82% who favored Biden in May.
Harris outperforms Trump with independent voters across the seven battleground states, securing 48% to Trump’s 40%. In contrast, Trump previously led Biden 41%-38% among independents. Importantly, Harris has a significant edge among “double haters”—voters who express dislike for both Biden and Trump—leading by 30 percentage points with 54% support compared to Trump’s 24%. Trump had also been ahead among this group before.
“Harris seems less encumbered by the past,” Amy Walter, the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Cook Political Report, stated in her analysis of the polling results. “Despite being the current vice president, 56% of voters in battleground states believe she offers a chance to ‘move beyond the Trump/Biden era,’ and 59% view her as emblematic of a ‘new generation of leadership.’
The Trump campaign is working to curb Harris’s upward momentum, accusing her of being “dangerously liberal” and attempting to associate her with Biden, whose approval ratings have remained around 40% during much of his presidency.
Harris, who recently embarked on a tour across multiple battleground states with her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, continues to label herself as “the underdog” in this race. She aims to leverage her polling success at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week.
The survey involved 2,867 likely voters from the seven swing states and was conducted between July 26 and August 2, including responses from third-party candidates.
