Kathryn Hahn discusses her nude scene in Marvel’s ‘Agatha All Along’
Kathryn Hahn is exposing herself in her latest role for Marvel.
The 51-year-old actress went fully nude in the debut episode of the fresh Disney+ series “Agatha All Along,” which is a continuation of the Marvel series “WandaVision.” In this premiere, her character, Agatha Harkness, emerges from a spell to find herself completely unclothed in her living room. She then strolls outside to chat with a neighbor, revealing her backside as she turns away.
In a conversation with Variety, Hahn shared that the nude scene was her concept.
“I suggested it,” she stated. “I thought we should portray her as literally stripped down, reflecting her compromised state at that moment.”
However, Marvel’s president, Kevin Feige, was uncertain about this decision. Executive producer Jac Schaeffer mentioned in an interview with TVLine that the script initially included the idea of Agatha being naked after the spell, but it was planned for her to put on a robe before stepping outside. Hahn argued that her character wouldn’t pause to grab clothing and would just exit the house as she was.
“Kathryn was completely on board,” Schaeffer shared with the publication. “I find it wonderful because it’s driven by character. It’s not for exploitative reasons. It highlights the priorities and circumstances of this witch.”
Hahn also confirmed to TVLine that she didn’t use a body double for this scene, during which Agatha’s breasts are not visible. This moment marks the first instance of female nudity in Marvel Studios’ history. Previously, there had been instances of male nudity, such as when Thor’s backside was shown in the 2022 film “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, owned by Disney, has begun to push some boundaries after being known primarily for family-friendly content. In July, the film “Deadpool & Wolverine” debuted as the first R-rated film within the MCU, showcasing graphic violence and strong language. Additionally, in January, “Echo” became the first of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series rated TV-MA, indicating it is intended for adult audiences and may not be suitable for children under 17.
The prior year, the PG-13 rated “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” included the first use of the f-word in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” star Chris Pratt expressed his excitement at having the opportunity to use the word in the movie.
“Kevin Feige spoke to (director) James Gunn and said, ‘You don’t want to be the guy known for including the first f-word in your film,’ ” Pratt recalled. “And James replied, ‘Yes, I do! That’s exactly what I want!'”
