Kathy Bates shares her satisfaction with ‘not having breasts’ after overcoming cancer: ‘They weighed about 10 pounds’
Kathy Bates is discussing her unusual pleasure in “not having breasts” after facing cancer twice.
The star of the “Matlock” reboot spoke with “MeSsy” podcast hosts Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler on Tuesday, sharing insights about her health experiences, including a double mastectomy performed over ten years ago.
“This might seem odd, but I had really heavy breasts,” Bates explained to the co-hosts. “They felt like 10 pounds after they were taken out. I had really large breasts, and I genuinely enjoy not having them. It’s a bit strange.”
Bates mentioned that she chose not to have reconstruction because, considering her age at the time, she felt, “I really didn’t want to go through that. I just wasn’t interested in it.”
“I was single, older, and didn’t anticipate being in a relationship, so it was always a question of why I needed to?” she further clarified.
The costume department on “Matlock” cleverly used materials like Spanx to design a camisole for her character, she revealed. Bates remarked that they included “faux cups” that are “incredibly comfortable and provide a lovely shape,” sharing with the hosts, “I feel fantastic when I wear that out.”
Bates was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, having previously faced ovarian cancer in 2003.
“My aunt passed away from it, my mom had it, and my niece also went through it,” Bates stated to People in 2018 regarding her breast cancer diagnosis.
Kathy Bates declares her retirement following ‘Matlock’ and then reconsiders
Recently, Bates has talked about more than her health, initially hinting at her retirement this fall but later surprising her fans by changing her mind.
The 76-year-old discussed her retirement feelings in an interview with The New York Times in September, where she expressed that a past film shoot had deeply upset her, leaving her in tears alone at home.
“This is my final performance,” she confessed to the publication. However, she later walked back those remarks in an interview with YSL News.
Laughing, Bates remarked on the shock from fans regarding her retirement comments that necessitated an official clarification. She reassured that she does not intend to retire anytime soon. “At that moment, I felt overwhelmed by the pressures of the show and fulfilling expectations,” Bates explained to YSL News recently. “It was a genuine reflection of my feelings that night. But I wouldn’t want to retire from this role. This show has been such a wonderful surprise for me, especially at my age.”
