Kerry Washington Celebrates Parents’ Legacy at Star-Studded Walk of Fame Ceremony

Kerry Washington honors her parents at Walk of Fame: ‘You made a wish and it came true’

Kerry Washington has always been a recognized talent — and now she has a star to affirm it.

The actress known for “Scandal,” aged 47, was honored with a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, sharing the moment with her parents.

During her speech, she expressed, “Mom, Dad, can you believe it? An actual star. You wished for this, and now it has come true. I’m amidst a galaxy of stars, all motivating each other to shine and illuminate the paths for others’ dreams.”

Having been in the entertainment industry since her 20s, Washington boasts a rich career across both theatre and television. She has been nominated for Emmy Awards for her performances in “Scandal” and the HBO production “Confirmation,” making this latest recognition a well-deserved honor.

“Her determination, elegance, and joy are evident in everything she does,” Shonda Rhimes, the creator of “Scandal,” remarked at the event. “She is a true star who brightens our lives . Kerry’s brilliance extends beyond herself; she shines for anyone who needs it.”

“For my dad, this achievement was a dream come true,” Washington shared with People following her ceremony. “He often spoke about this, so it meant the world to share this day with my parents and have them with me.”

Prior to the launch of her memoir “Thicker than Water” in 2023, Washington disclosed that she found out later in life that her father, Earl Washington, was not her biological dad.

She learned this when she informed her parents about her plan to appear on PBS’s “Finding Your Roots,” a show where celebrities trace their ancestry through DNA analysis.

“Upon learning this, I felt like I finally understood my own story,” Washington told People at the time. “I realized I had been a supporting character in theirs.”

Washington’s star is the 2,796th addition to the iconic walkway that extends along Hollywood Boulevard. This historic landmark, adorned with pink and gold plaques, is celebrated through ceremonies that often include notable figures from the honoree’s past.

Attending Washington’s ceremony were not just family members and Rhimes, but also Tyler Perry, a longtime friend and collaborator from projects such as “For Colored Girls.”

“She is remarkably kind and compassionate, powerful and speaks from the heart,” Perry remarked.

“Her performances come from a place of understanding that she represents the lives of the characters she portrays,” noted Perry about Washington’s acting. “I’m incredibly proud of her.”

During the event, Washington dedicated her star to aspiring young artists aiming for their dreams, saying she hopes that one day someone with her surname will visit Hollywood Boulevard, see her star, and envision their own name in its place.
