Kirk Gibson Shares Thoughts on Freddie Freeman’s Walk-Off Grand Slam in World Series Game 1
Kirk Gibson became a hot topic following Freddie Freeman’s impressive walk-off grand slam, which helped the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 6-3 in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series on Saturday.
“I had a feeling, like, ‘This is going to happen,’” Gibson shared with Dodgers Insider. “I could just feel it.”
Freeman’s remarkable hit drew parallels between his performance and Gibson’s memorable home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
Back in 1988, Gibson, despite battling injuries in both legs, made a pinch-hit appearance and launched a walk-off home run that secured his place in Dodgers history. That at-bat was his only one in that World Series.
Prior to the postseason, Freeman had sprained his ankle and had been dedicating extra time in the training room ahead of playoff matches.
Gibson expressed joy that Freeman could seize such a pivotal moment, especially given all the challenges he faced this year.
“Everything he’s dealt with this year is just amazing,” Gibson told Dodgers Insider. “He must feel fantastic. It’s been a tough road, it truly couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person.”
