NFL playoff winners and losers: Mike Tomlin, Justin Herbert flop on wild-card Saturday The Saturday slots on the NFL wild-card schedule have long been seen as a dumping ground for the league's least tantalizing playoff products, and this year's doubleheader did little to challenge that notion. Kohl’s to shut down 27 ‘underperforming’ stores by April. Here’s the list

Kohl’s has announced it will be closing 27 of its least successful stores by April 2025 as part of a broader strategy to reshape the struggling retailer.

The company, based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, mentioned in a Jan. 9 press release that due to falling sales, all workers at the affected stores “have been notified, and provided with a competitive severance package or the opportunity to apply for other available positions at Kohl’s.”

“While Kohl’s remains confident in the strength and viability of its profitable locations, these specific ones were underperforming,” the statement added.

In addition, an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, which has been in operation since 2010, will close in May 2025. Kohl’s will now manage customer orders from their store locations instead of relying on the fulfillment center.

“These decisions are always taken with great care,” stated CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will be stepping down on Jan. 15. “As we continue to develop our long-term growth strategy, it’s crucial to make tough but necessary choices to ensure the sustainability and future success of our business for our customers and team members.”

Ashley Buchanan, the former CEO of Michaels Companies, is set to become Kohl’s new CEO on Jan. 15. Kingsbury will continue to serve as an advisor and be part of the company’s board until his retirement in May 2025.

Kohl’s indicated in November 2024 that it anticipates a sales decline of 7% to 8% for 2024. The retailer is set to report its total annual sales in February.
