Kyle Chandler in discussions to portray the new ‘Green Lantern’ in an upcoming HBO series, reports say
Kyle Chandler, known for his role in “Friday Night Lights,” is reportedly in talks to star in a new HBO series set in the DC Universe.
According to various sources, including The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, the Emmy-winning actor is “in negotiations” to take on the role of Hal Jordan in “Lanterns,” a new series based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.”
This eight-episode series is the latest live-action adaptation of “Green Lantern,” following Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Hal Jordan in the 2011 film. Produced by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios, the project was covered by Deadline.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that “Lanterns” is currently in the casting phase and hiring directors, with plans to begin filming in Atlanta early next year.
This show, along with other upcoming DC Comics releases, aims to initiate a new chapter for the DC Universe.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, said in a statement obtained by Deadline that “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most intriguing characters, and ‘Lanterns’ transforms them into an original detective story that is crucial to the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’
As of Monday afternoon, YSL News had not received responses from Kyle Chandler’s agent, DC Comics, or Warner Brothers regarding comments.
Kyle Chandler in negotiations for the role of the latest ‘Green Lantern’
“Lanterns” revolves around the stories of two ‘Green Lanterns,’ John Stewart and Hal Jordan, who serve as “space cops” overseeing Earth, as explained by Gunn.
<p”They uncover a chilling mystery that ties into the larger narrative of the DCU,” Gunn shared in a January 2023 clip.
While other “Lanterns” appear in the series, Gunn emphasizes that the core narrative is a “terrestrial-based TV show” reminiscent of HBO’s “True Detective,” which is about police investigations.
If Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan, he would portray a skilled pilot who inherits a “power ring” after an alien’s sudden death in a spaceship crash. This alien was a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an organization of beings from different parts of the universe, equipped with power rings powered by the green energy of willpower, according to the DC Comics website.
Hal Jordan would assume the responsibilities of the deceased Green Lantern, ensuring the safety and protection of Earth’s space sector. As outlined in DC Comics, he would join “a standing army of 7,200 Green Lantern Corps members patrolling 3,600 sectors of space.”
According to the Green Lantern’s online profile, “Hal’s journey as a Green Lantern has been filled with challenges. He has faced adversaries, including friends, colleagues, and loved ones.” Yet despite the struggles his Green Lantern identity brings to his personal life, Hal remains an honest individual who acts courageously and is committed to safeguarding others—whether on his own, with the Corps, or alongside the Justice League and other heroes of Earth. Hal has sworn to uphold the oath of every Green Lantern—that no evil will go unpunished.”
Forthcoming ‘distinctive’ projects from DC Studios
“Lanterns” is one of several projects revealed by Gunn last year as he and Safran collaborated to ensure that the DC Universe is interlinked across film, television, gaming, and animation.
Gunn noted that characters should remain consistent and portrayed by the same actors, fitting into a cohesive narrative. Projects that fall outside this continuity, like Matt Reeves’ “Batman,” Todd Philips’ “Joker,” or “Teen Titans Go!” will be clearly identified as DC Elseworlds, separate from the primary DC Universe continuity.
These initiatives are part of DC Studios’ Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, heralding an extensive eight to ten-year strategy outlining the future of DC Studios in film, television, and gaming, as stated by Gunn.
The upcoming shows and films are just a portion of what DC Studios has lined up for the inaugural chapter of this new era.
<p”I cherish DC characters deeply, having loved them since childhood. This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do something completely novel,” Gunn expressed.
