Labor Day is a holiday that acknowledges “the social and economic achievements of American workers.” It has its origins in the late 1800s when labor leaders advocated for a federal holiday to honor workers’ contributions to the nation’s strength and prosperity, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, 23 other states had made it a holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland officially established the first Monday in September as a national holiday.
