NBA hits Hornets’ LaMelo Ball with $100K fine for ‘offensive and derogatory remark’

The NBA has imposed a fine of $100,000 on Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball for making an “offensive and derogatory remark” during a postgame interview, as announced by the league on Sunday.

After the Hornets triumphed over Milwaukee with a score of 115-114 on Saturday, Ball made a homophobic remark while being interviewed on the court.

In the game, Ball scored 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out six assists, helping the Hornets elevate their record to 5-7. He made two crucial free throws with just 7.3 seconds left in the game, sealing the one-point win for Charlotte. Bucks coach Doc Rivers expressed strong opinions, claiming Giannis Antetokounmpo did not foul Ball in the lead-up to those free throws.

“LaMelo Ball simply fell,” Rivers conveyed to the press. “He just went down. There was no one close to him. He slipped. We took possession, and that was it. This makes two consecutive games where erroneous calls have been made against us.”

Antetokounmpo missed a shot from 18 feet out with only 2.2 seconds left.

Referee Curtis Blair, who led the officiating crew for the game, admitted that the foul call on Ball was incorrect.

“During the live action, we ruled it a case of illegal contact between the legs,” Blair explained to a pool reporter after the game. “However, upon reviewing the play postgame, it was clear there was no illegal contact.”

The Bucks had exhausted their replay challenges by the time the foul was called on Antetokounmpo. Blair mentioned that had they still had a challenge available and reviewed the call, it would have been reversed.
