Just a day after expressing that he was no longer pursuing the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coaching role, Liam Coen unexpectedly changed his decision.

Coen, who serves as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, informed the Buccaneers on Thursday night of his decision to accept the head coaching position with the Jaguars, according to a source who is familiar with the situation and spoke to YSL News Sports anonymously, as the agreement has yet to be finalized.

Tampa Bay had proposed a contract that would have positioned Coen as the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL.

The Jaguars made the decision to part ways with coach Doug Pederson earlier this month after three years with the team. Initially, the team had stated that general manager Trent Baalke would remain, but he was let go on Wednesday afternoon.

Following this, Coen had a meeting with the Jaguars on Thursday, according to reports.

“After multiple conversations with Trent Baalke this week, we both concluded that it would be best for us to part ways in a respectful manner, effective immediately,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan mentioned in a statement. “I extend my deepest gratitude to Trent for his contributions over the past five seasons.”

Khan also announced that Ethan Waugh will step in as the interim general manager.

Out of the seven head coaching positions available this offseason, four have now been filled: Jacksonville, Chicago, New England, and the New York Jets.

Dallas, Las Vegas, and New Orleans are still looking to fill their coaching vacancies.
