Lil Wayne announces he’s skipping Super Bowl 59 after being overlooked for halftime show
Lil Wayne is not in the same boat as Kendrick Lamar.
Following the decision to not feature him in the halftime show for Super Bowl 59, the rapper from New Orleans took to his Instagram story on Wednesday to announce he will not attend the event in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana.
“I’m sure you all know I won’t be there this week,” he stated. “Much love to New Orleans, but I’ve been focusing on something quite special. I have exciting news coming your way.”
He later hinted at a surprise for Thursday and added, “Until then? I’m just relaxing.”
What’s the big surprise? Lil Wayne is featured in a commercial for the skincare brand Cetaphil and hinted at a new music project set to release on June 6.
“In moments when we feel a little sensitive… I mean, who hasn’t experienced that? Right, @Cetaphil? If you can’t fix your sensitive situation, at least you can nurture your sensitive skin,” he captioned his Instagram post featuring the ad.
The commercial, titled “We’re all a Lil Sensitive,” humorously addresses the Super Bowl snub and Lil Wayne’s earlier responses.
This advertisement will be broadcast in the New Orleans area during the game, where the Kansas City Chiefs will compete against the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII from 2022.
Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl 59 halftime performance
Kendrick Lamar, the 37-year-old rapper known for “Not Like Us,” revealed in September that he would be performing at the Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show. He shared this exciting news in a YouTube video featuring him on a football field in front of a large American flag.
“My name is Kendrick Lamar, and I will be performing at Super Bowl LIX,” he stated in the video. “Will you be joining me? I hope so.”
Roc Nation, Apple Music, and the NFL confirmed this announcement in a press release, and the NFL also posted a promotional image on X featuring Lamar on the football field.
Lil Wayne expressed that the Super Bowl halftime snub ‘hurt him’
After the announcement, Lil Wayne commented that the snub “hurt him deeply.”
“I believed there was nothing better than that opportunity, that stage, that platform, in my hometown. So yes, it hurt—it hurt a lot,” he shared in a previous Instagram Live session.
However, on a recent episode of “The Skip Bayless Show,” the celebrated “Lollipop” rapper clarified his earlier remarks and addressed any speculation of rivalry with Lamar.
“I’ve talked with him, wished him well, and told him he needs to deliver an incredible performance,” Wayne shared about his conversation with Lamar, emphasizing, “You have to shine. You’ve got to give it your all.”
