Right-handed pitcher Luis Severino has made headlines as the first significant free agent to sign with the newly relocated Athletics in their temporary venue in Sacramento.

Severino has finalized a three-year, $67 million deal with the Athletics, as confirmed by a source who requested to remain anonymous until the formal announcement is made, according to YSL News Sports.

This $67 million contract marks the largest commitment in the franchise’s history, surpassing the $66 million six-year extension awarded to third baseman Eric Chávez back in 2004.

After a nine-year stint with the New York Yankees, Severino contributed to the crosstown Mets last season, achieving an 11-7 record with a 3.91 ERA and 161 strikeouts over 182 innings. During the postseason, he started three games for the Mets, including a victory in the opening matchup of the NL wild card series against Milwaukee, and pitched Game 2 of the NL Division Series against Philadelphia.

His final appearance was in the NL Championship Series against the Dodgers, where he gave up two unearned runs and was pulled from the game in the fifth inning of an 8-0 defeat.

Severino chose to pass on the Mets’ qualifying offer of $21.05 million in search of better opportunities in free agency.
