Machine Gun Kelly Reflects on One Year of Sobriety: ‘I Can Forgive Myself’
Machine Gun Kelly is celebrating a full year of sobriety.
The rapper, known for his honesty, shared insights about his path after discreetly entering rehab to tackle his struggles with alcohol, marijuana, and pills. He spoke to People before the People’s Choice Country Awards, explaining that he realized he needed to confront the “generational curses” he inherited.
“I was born on the 22nd. Twenty-two is considered a master number. What lessons do I need to learn?” Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, shared. “I needed to uncover the patterns and issues that were passed down to me and to my father. May he rest in peace.”
Now 34 years old, Kelly marked a year of sobriety in August. He mentioned on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast that his motivation to get sober began a few years ago when his now 15-year-old daughter, Casie, voiced her concerns. At one point, she remarked, “Dad, I can tell when you’re high.”
“It took some time for me to really commit to that decision because drugs have this hold on you,” the “Wild Boy” rapper explained.
He also expressed gratitude for the support of Megan Fox during his recovery journey.
“Megan has been incredibly supportive while I navigated the mental challenges of getting off drugs,” he revealed on Bunnie Xo’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast in August.
In his conversation with People, Kelly found solace in the thought: “I can hold myself accountable today to forgive myself tomorrow.”
“I have a daughter who means everything to me, and I would do anything for her,” he added. “I have a wonderful family, amazing friends, and a beautiful life to embrace. I’m no longer stuck in a fog that kept me from seeing that.”
