Maisy Stella, former child actress, returns to her ‘true passion’ in ‘My Old Ass’
At just 20 years old, Maisy Stella is no stranger to fame.
She first gained recognition at the age of 8 with a viral clip of her singing Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” with her sister Lennon, long before social media took hold. The sisters then shared the screen for six seasons on the ABC show “Nashville.” Now, she’s making waves again with a prominent role in the dramedy “My Old Ass,” which is currently in theaters.
“I have a lot of people tell me, ‘It’s so strange; I feel like I’ve grown up with you,’” Stella shares. “I find that really lovely.”
In “My Old Ass,” Stella plays Elliott, a teen celebrating her 18th birthday who has a life-changing experience after taking mushrooms and meets her 39-year-old self, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza. Together, they help each other work through personal challenges as young Elliott navigates a summer rich in family connections, romance, and future aspirations.
Here’s everything you need to know about Stella, whether you’ve followed her career from the start or just discovering her:
‘My Old Ass’ fits perfectly into Maisy Stella’s passion for acting
Stella feels a strong sense of nostalgia, so the themes of “My Old Ass” deeply resonated with her. Megan Park, the writer and director, has been a fan of Stella’s for quite some time. Although Stella auditioned for Park’s previous film, “The Fallout,” she didn’t land a role. Nonetheless, Park featured one of their songs in the credits and kept Stella in mind while developing “My Old Ass,” noting her vibrant personality and captivating presence.
Stella appreciated the family dynamics portrayed in the film, particularly how young Elliott prioritizes friendships over family early on. She identified with older Elliott too, realizing she could gain valuable insights from her younger self. “I never considered how I was perceived or what I looked like. That’s the beauty of childhood, but it can be challenging for a young girl in this industry,” Stella reflected. “Younger Elliott would remind me of those very things.”
From ‘Nashville’ to aspiring movie star, acting remains Maisy Stella’s first passion
Stella and her sister gained considerable fame on “Nashville,” playing the talented daughters of country star Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton). They released hit songs, authored a children’s book, and even serenaded Taylor Swift with “You Belong With Me” at the 2013 CMA Awards. “I was a delightfully oblivious child, simply enjoying every moment,” Stella reminisces, while Park points out that Stella was an early muse for Billie Eilish’s music career.
With a musical background—her parents were a well-known Canadian duo named The Stellas—Maisy admits her primary obsession was pursuing acting. “Lennon created a cardboard TV for me, where I would climb inside and act out different genres she pretended to change channels for,” she recalls. “That was our game.”
Her “true passion” for acting re-emerged after a break following “Nashville,” which concluded in 2018. “Three years later, it hit me— I was so eager to get back to it and truly missed it,” she explains. Although she currently isn’t making music with her sister—who is focused on her own album—Stella hopes to compose music for films someday.
Is Maisy Stella the next Jenna Ortega? Her director certainly thinks so
Maisy has another significant project lined up:
Nonetheless, Park believes Stella is completely ready. The director of Stella’s project “My Old Ass” has a knack for recognizing talent. For instance, “The Fallout” played a significant role in catapulting Jenna Ortega into stardom. Park praises both actresses, stating, “They are capable of anything. I keep telling Maisy, ‘That’s going to be your story. Once audiences see this film, you’ll be next.’”
