Malachi Corley makes mistake turning New York Jets TD into touchback
In a bid to score against the Houston Texans, the New York Jets faced an early challenge. The game was at a standstill with no points on the board when they attempted to capitalize on a key play.
During their “Thursday Night Football” game in the second quarter, rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley ran an end-around to the right and looked set to score a touchdown. However, he fumbled the ball just before reaching the goal line.
The ball rolled out over the back of the end zone.
According to NFL rules, this results in a touchback, allowing the Texans to take possession of the ball.
This incident would have marked Corley’s first ever NFL touchdown.
Unfortunately, his error cut short what had been the Jets’ best drive of that evening.
New York advanced the ball 69 yards in just six plays, aided by a facemask penalty against Texans’ defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi. They seemed ready to score, but the game remained tied at the start of the second quarter.
The Jets’ account on X, which used to be known as Twitter, had to update their post regarding Corley’s run that was initially reported as a touchdown.
This situation is reminiscent of an incident with veteran NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson back in 2008 when what should have been a touchdown turned into a fumble because he let go of the ball before reaching the end zone.
