Malik Willis plays down the revenge narrative ahead of Packers vs. Titans matchup
Malik Willis is in a surprising position as he is set to make his second start with the Green Bay Packers against his prior team, the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans traded Willis to the Packers right before the start of the 2024 NFL season in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in 2025. This move took place just 2.5 years after Tennessee selected him in the third round in the 2022 NFL Draft.
During his time with the Titans, Willis was not afforded the opportunity to be the full-time starting quarterback. He started only three games as a rookie in 2022 before Tennessee picked Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 draft, leaving him as the backup while Ryan Tannehill and later Josh Dobbs took the lead in the previous season.
This led to speculation about any potential resentment Willis might feel toward the Titans as they prepare to clash in Week 3.
Willis addressed this speculation during Wednesday’s practice, expressing indifference about proving the Titans wrong.
“I couldn’t care less, bro,” Willis stated, according to Matt Schneidman from The Athletic. “I think I got paid the whole time I was there. I’m really grateful for the opportunities they provided me.”
Willis was initially drafted by the Titans’ former general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel, both of whom are no longer with the team. Nevertheless, Willis emphasized his appreciation for the organization.
“They brought me into this league, regardless of whether those guys are there,” he explained. “That organization took a chance on me. [Owner] Miss Amy [Adams Strunk] and the team were great to me, as far as I’m concerned.”
It seems there won’t be any provocative comments or actions from Willis before the game on Sunday. He intends to focus on replicating the success he found against the Colts, where he completed 12 of 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown while running for 41 yards on six attempts.
The only potential disruption to Willis’ plans might be the return of starter Jordan Love, who is recovering from an MCL injury that he sustained in Week 1. Love was seen at Packers practice on Wednesday as a limited participant.
