Marcy Kaptur Secures 22nd Term, Continuing Her Historic Legacy in Ohio’s Congress

Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving congresswoman, secures her 22nd term in Ohio

The United States’ longest-serving congresswoman is set to begin her 22nd term in office.

Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur triumphed over Republican state Representative Derek Merrin in a tightly contested race for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. The Associated Press confirmed Kaptur’s victory on Wednesday once the county election boards reported their certified results from the November 5 election.

Across the country, House Republicans are poised to maintain their majority in the next Congress, which will start on January 3, providing President-elect Donald Trump with significant control, as the GOP has also regained dominance in the U.S. Senate. In the House, Republicans will have at least 218 seats while Democrats will hold 213. The AP has yet to declare winners in four remaining House races.

In Ohio, preliminary results indicated that Kaptur led by 1,193 votes.

“This campaign has always focused on the strength and resilience of our communities. Today, we not only celebrate our victory but also reaffirm our commitment to the idea that what America creates and cultivates leads to America’s growth,” Kaptur stated on Wednesday.

Kaptur represents the majority of northwest Ohio, covering Defiance, Williams, Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Erie counties.

Throughout her campaign, she stressed the importance of economic issues, opposing “unfair trade agreements,” and advocating for high-paying jobs, job training, and technical skills programs. Kaptur mentioned that she voted for enhanced border security and the 2024 legislation that Republicans rejected.

Kaptur was re-elected in 2022 with almost 57% of the vote against Republican J.R. Majewski in a district that became more Republican-oriented during the last redistricting. Merrin, who has more political experience than Majewski, was also the more conservative option for Ohio House speaker in 2023.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose indicated on X on Wednesday that the vote margin in the 9th District likely falls outside the threshold for an automatic recount. In Ohio, recounts occur when the vote difference is 0.5% or less of the total votes cast.

The official statewide results will be certified on December 2.
