Will the stock market be open or closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2025? Check the holiday schedule
On Monday, January 20, the U.S. stock markets will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The King Holiday Bill was enacted by President Ronald Reagan on November 2, 1983, establishing the third Monday of January as a federal holiday to commemorate civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as noted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will remain closed on this federal holiday but will resume normal trading hours on Tuesday, January 21.
The U.S. bond markets will also observe a closure on January 20, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, reopening on January 21 as well.
Following MLK Day, trading on Wall Street will continue as usual until Monday, February 17, when the stock and bond markets will again close for Presidents Day.

In 2025, the U.S. stock markets will be closed on the following dates:
- Presidents Day: Monday, February 17
- Good Friday: Friday, April 18
- Memorial Day: Monday, May 26
- Juneteenth: Thursday, June 19
- Independence Day: Friday, July 4 (Note: Markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET on July 3)
- Labor Day: Monday, September 1
- Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 27 (Note: Markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET on November 28)
- Christmas: Thursday, December 25 (Note: Markets will close early at 1 p.m. ET on December 24)
