Matt Gaetz Re-elected in Florida’s 1st Congressional District
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Congressman Matt Gaetz has successfully secured reelection in Florida’s 1st Congressional District.
On Tuesday, Gaetz won decisively against Democratic candidate Gay Valimont, obtaining 66.3% of the votes compared to Valimont’s 33.7%, as reported at 8:30 p.m. ET.
After defeating his Republican opponent, Aaron Dimmock, in August, Gaetz spent little time campaigning in Northwest Florida, having run a vigorous primary campaign but largely neglecting Valimont’s challenge since then.
Valimont, a former leader in the Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, criticized Gaetz, claiming he is indifferent to the needs of residents in Northwest Florida.
“His controversies are featured in more headlines than his positive contributions,” Valimont stated in one of her campaign ads.
She also condemned Gaetz for being under an ongoing ethics investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Acknowledging the challenges she faced, Valimont mentioned to the YSL News Florida Network last week that she recognized it would take time for change.
“As Americans, we must come together to identify and tackle issues,” Valimont expressed. “Matt Gaetz will never be willing to engage in that dialogue.”
