Meghan Trainor Opens Up About Touring with Children, Her Admiration for T-Pain, and Embracing Self-Acceptance

Meghan Trainor discusses touring with children, her admiration for T-Pain, and finding self-acceptance

Meghan Trainor’s presence in music is more powerful than ever, thanks to her latest singles “To the Moon” and “Been Like This,” alongside a popular tour promoting her new album, “Timeless.”

Her song “Criminals,” featured on the deluxe edition of “Timeless,” quickly gained attention, especially after it was featured in the captivating dance sequence credits of Nicole Kidman’s Netflix thriller, “A Perfect Couple.” Trainor described it as “the coolest accomplishment of my life.”

She’s also become a familiar voice during mornings as she sings the theme for “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” a segment of the popular show where she often visits. “I’ve known Hoda (Kotb) since I was 19. It feels like a second home to me,” she shared.

Since her breakthrough with the unique hit “All About That Bass,” which combined doo-wop and hip-hop elements, Trainor has solidified her status as a pop icon with empowering lyrics about body positivity and uplifting tunes, including “No,” “Made You Look,” and “Lips Are Movin’.”

Now on tour until October—traveling with her husband Daryl Sabara and their two sons, Riley, age 3, and Barry, 14 months—Trainor paused to discuss her essential experiences on tour and in everyday life before performing in Atlanta.

Meghan Trainor’s journey to self-acceptance

Two of Trainor’s latest tracks, “I Wanna Thank Me,” featuring Niecy Nash, and “Been Like This,” featuring T-Pain, center on the theme of self-acceptance. She attributes her growing confidence to turning 30 last December and her overall growth.

“I’ve heard that in your 30s you start caring less about others’ opinions, and I really feel that,” she explained. “I’m more focused on my own life rather than what’s portrayed online or in the media. Even after having my children, I still face challenges with body positivity. However, I aim to create songs that resonate with everyone, which I see when I perform and connect with people of all ages, from children to grandparents.”

Meghan Trainor believes ‘a hit is a hit’

Trainor’s music highlights her unique features. By blending classic harmonies reminiscent of ’60s girl groups with modern pop trends, she stands out in today’s music scene.

Her musical influences are diverse, and she and her husband are already sharing their love for classic music with their children.

“During breakfast at home, Daryl plays artists like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, and I love watching him and the boys dance. Songs such as ‘Be My Baby’ by The Ronettes catch Riley’s attention, and he wants to know the artists behind the songs,” Trainor shared. “A hit song transcends time.”

Meghan Trainor expresses gratitude towards Brandy and T-Pain

Trainor is an unapologetic admirer of Katy Perry, recently expressing on SiriusXM that the “Teenage Dream” artist is her greatest inspiration.

But when she was

For a high school student in Massachusetts, the sounds of Brandy and T-Pain had the most impact.

“Brandy’s ‘Human’ album and all of T-Pain’s albums were my lifelines during high school,” Trainor shares. “During moments when I felt out of place, thinking I should be writing songs in L.A. instead of learning about astronomy, I would sneak off to the restroom to record my music.”

T-Pain features on Trainor’s new track “Been Like This,” and she appreciates the significance of this collaboration.

“I’ve made it clear that T-Pain is my idol. Maybe that’s why he agreed to work with me, and now he’s part of my family for good,” she notes.

Trainor also enjoys calypso music, influenced by her uncle from Trinidad, and frequently plays it as she gets ready for shows.

“My hairstylist always asks, ‘What is this? I adore it!’ Even on the gloomiest days, it lifts my spirits,” she adds.

Juggling Life on Tour with Two Young Kids

Trainor’s Timeless tour marks her return to the stage after eight years, and she admits adjusting to the demands of touring has been a learning curve. Now, she’s better equipped to manage her health, making sleep a priority.

This tour is also her first with her kids. Adapting to this new routine has been a challenge, but Trainor and her husband, Daryl Sabara, have organized a plan.

“We have an amazing nanny who helps Daryl give the kids a bath in my green room. We dress them in pajamas and snuggle with them before I go on stage. After that, the nanny and Daryl put them on the bus to sleep while I perform. We’re keeping track of what works for future tours and might even need extra support,” she reveals.

The tour bus is stocked with RXBAR snacks for Trainor and Haribo gummy bears for the children. During the day, the family enjoys playtime, exploring indoor attractions, parks, and aquariums – they even visited the huge Georgia Aquarium before her concert in the Atlanta area earlier this month.

Secrets Behind Meghan Trainor’s Gorgeous Hair

Trainor’s stunning golden hair looks particularly vibrant on her tour, but she attributes the credit to her stylist, Antoine Martinez. She decided to get beaded extensions for the tour, a suggestion from Martinez to minimize hair damage during performances.

“Washing it is quite the process, so I rely on dry shampoo,” she explains, adding with a chuckle, “I’ve got that pop star hair 24/7.”
