Mercury Strike Deal for 5-Time WNBA All-Star Alyssa Thomas from Sun, According to Sources

Mercury acquire 5-time WNBA All-Star Alyssa Thomas in trade with Sun, per reports

Exciting changes are underway in Phoenix.

The Phoenix Mercury have reportedly secured the services of five-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas through a trade with the Connecticut Sun, as reported by several sources such as ESPN and The Athletic on Tuesday. In this trade, the Mercury will send guards Natasha Cloud and Rebecca Allen along with the 12th overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft to the Sun in exchange for Thomas and Ty Harris.

Last season, Thomas averaged 10.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 7.9 assists, boasting an impressive shooting rate of 50.9%. She played a pivotal role in leading the Sun to the playoffs in 2024, achieving a remarkable eighth consecutive postseason appearance—the longest active streak in the WNBA. The Sun won the first round of the playoffs against the Indiana Fever 2-0 before falling to the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in the semifinals.

Beyond her All-Star and All-WNBA First Team recognition in 2024, Thomas also claimed an Olympic gold medal as part of the U.S. women’s basketball team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Initially drafted 4th overall by the New York Liberty from Maryland, Thomas was quickly traded to Connecticut on draft day. Over her 11 seasons with the Sun, she has garnered five All-Star selections, three All-WNBA Team selections, and six All-Defensive Team honors. Thomas led the Sun to the WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022 and was the runner-up for the Most Valuable Player award in 2023.

Thomas exits the Sun as the franchise’s all-time leader in games played (319), assists (1,463), steals (494), rebounds (2,396), field goals made (1,502), and free throws made (884). Additionally, she holds the record for the most triple-doubles in WNBA history, with 15 across both the regular season and playoffs.

Alyssa Thomas will now join a Mercury team that is in a state of transition. Both All-Star center Brittney Griner and All-Star guard Diana Taurasi, who were instrumental in securing the WNBA Championship for the Mercury in 2014, are currently unrestricted free agents. After ending last in the league in 2023 with a dismal 9-31 record, the Mercury improved to seventh place in 2024, finishing with a 19-21 record. They made it to the postseason but were eliminated in the first round by the Lynx.

Thomas is engaged to her former teammate at Connecticut, DeWanna Bonner, who is also an unrestricted free agent. Bonner had a successful 10-season career with the Mercury after being drafted 5th overall in the 2009 WNBA draft before being traded to the Sun in 2020.
