Mexican President Initiates Tariffs in Response to U.S. Actions
MEXICO CITY – On Saturday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she has directed her economy minister to introduce both tariff and non-tariff actions to protect her nation’s interests following the U.S. imposing widespread tariffs on goods from Mexico.
In a detailed message on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration is not looking for conflict with the United States but rather aims for cooperation and discussion.
The left-leaning leader has consistently aimed to ease tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump and highlighted her government’s achievements since her inauguration in October, which include the confiscation of 20 million doses of the potent synthetic opioid fentanyl and the arrest of over 10,000 individuals associated with drug trafficking.
Trump stated that the tariffs on Mexico were a result of the country’s inability to prevent fentanyl from entering the U.S., alongside what he describes as rampant migration issues.
