Mia Farrow expresses understanding for actors collaborating with Woody Allen
Is it acceptable for actors to work with Woody Allen? Mia Farrow shares her thoughts.
The 79-year-old actress, known for her role in “Rosemary’s Baby,” stated on “CBS Sunday Morning” that she does not blame actors who choose to appear in films directed by her ex-partner, whom she has accused of abusing their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him,” Farrow remarked about Allen. “I’m not one to say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t do that.’
In response to CBS’s inquiry about her ability to dissociate her experiences working with Allen from the subsequent “personal trials and tribulations,” Farrow affirmed, “Oh, yeah.”
Farrow has appeared in several of Allen’s films, such as “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985) and “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986). They were in a relationship from 1980 to 1992, and she adopted Dylan in 1985.
Both Mia and Dylan Farrow allege that Allen sexually abused Dylan in 1992 when she was just 7 years old. As an adult, Dylan publicly revealed the allegations in a 2014 New York Times essay, where she stated that the director “sexually assaulted me.”
Allen has denied these claims and has never faced criminal charges. In 2021, both Mia and Dylan were featured in the HBO documentary series “Allen v. Farrow,” revisiting their allegations. Allen continues to direct films, with his most recent work, “Coup de chance,” premiering at the Venice Film Festival in 2023.
Kate Winslet and Rebecca Hall express regret for working with Woody Allen
However, since the #MeToo movement gained momentum, several actors who worked with Allen have voiced regrets and indicated they would choose not to collaborate with him again.
Actor and podcaster Griffin Newman, who appeared in Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York,” mentioned in a series of social media posts in 2017 that he “deeply” regrets his role and plans to donate his earnings to RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
“It was an educational experience for all the wrong reasons,” Newman expressed. “I learned definitively that I cannot prioritize my career over my ethics again.”
Rebecca Hall also confessed in 2018 that she regrets starring in “A Rainy Day in New York” and vowed to donate her pay to Time’s Up.
“I realize, not just how intricate this situation is, but that my actions made another woman feel silenced and ignored,” Hall said. “That weighs heavily on me now and in any future context, and I am truly sorry. I regret this choice and wouldn’t make the same decision today.”
During a 2020 discussion with Vanity Fair, Kate Winslet, who acted in Allen’s “Wonder Wheel,” questioned why she collaborated with him and asserted her need to “take responsibility” for that choice.
In 2021, during an interview on her talk show, Drew Barrymore expressed her regret for working with Allen on the 1996 film “Everyone Says I Love You.”
“At one time, working with Woody Allen felt like a significant career milestone,” Barrymore reflected. “But after having children, I realized I had been manipulated into ignoring the deeper narratives surrounding the situation.”
Farrow gratefully acknowledged Barrymore’s words at the time, calling them “brave and incredibly generous.”
Conversely, other actors have defended their collaboration with Allen. In 2018, Javier Bardem, who starred in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” stated he would readily work with Allen again “tomorrow.”
“Public accusations can be very harmful,” Bardem commented, according to Variety. “If there were ever a trial and it is proven true, my stance would change, but as of now, nothing has altered.”
In 2019, Scarlett Johansson, who featured in Allen’s “Match Point,” “Scoop,” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” told The Hollywood Reporter, “I have affection for Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
