Michigan finalizes contract with football coach Sherrone Moore

Michigan’s football team has officially reached an agreement with coach Sherrone Moore, completing his contract.

This announcement comes nearly two weeks after YSL News Sports highlighted that Moore’s head coaching contract had not yet been finalized. On Wednesday, Michigan confirmed via social media that all signatures are now in place. The university previously disclosed that Moore’s contract spans five years, with an annual value of approximately $6 million.

“The support from our University of Michigan administration, especially from President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel, has been fantastic throughout this process, and I’m thrilled that we have this complete contract,” Moore expressed in a statement. “I truly appreciate their backing for our team, and all three of us are united in our vision for this football program.”

In their joint statement, Ono and Manuel praised Moore as “a proven leader” and “an outstanding ambassador,” emphasizing that the university and athletic department fully support him and his team.

This finalized deal comes nearly eight months after Moore was promoted to head coach, succeeding Jim Harbaugh, who moved on to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. The timing is also notable as it follows Michigan’s recent 31-12 defeat to No. 3 Texas, leaving the Wolverines with a record of 1-1 for the season.

Initially, upon his hiring, Moore signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that outlined his initial pay and the basic terms of his future contract. However, this MOU lacked specific, crucial details typically present in head coaching contracts, especially concerning potential scenarios that arise if a coach is dismissed for cause. Moore, who formerly served as Michigan’s offensive coordinator, is currently facing potential disciplinary action from the NCAA as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged sign-stealing scheme.
