Is Microsoft 365 and Outlook experiencing issues? Many users report outages this Monday morning

This Monday morning, Microsoft announced it is looking into a problem affecting users trying to access its services, including Outlook email.

On X, Microsoft communicated that they are analyzing “an issue affecting users trying to utilize Exchange Online or certain functionalities within Microsoft Teams calendar.” These applications are widely used for workplace communication.

DownDetector, a service that tracks technology outages, began noting complaints of outages impacting users worldwide starting around 8 a.m. ET.

By 11 a.m. ET, DownDetector had recorded thousands of reports of problems, with users sharing their experiences on social media.

“#Microsoft outages are ruining my productive work day,” one user commented. “I might have to resort to phone calls and handwritten notes to regain some control.”

In a follow-up message, Microsoft informed users, “We’ve pinpointed a recent change that we suspect led to these issues. We are in the process of reverting the change and examining what further steps are necessary to resolve the matter.”

According to a recent update from Microsoft, a fix has been rolled out to “about 90% of the affected systems and our targeted restarts are continuing to progress.”

Past Microsoft 365 outages

On September 12, numerous Microsoft 365 users reported outages where they could not log into their email or access other applications.

This prior outage was resolved shortly thereafter.

During that incident, Downdetector estimated that over 24,000 users experienced issues when the disruption peaked around 9 a.m. ET.

The Microsoft 365 Status account on X posted an update around 10:45 a.m. ET, stating that the problems had been “confirmed as resolved.”

In a series of communications leading up to the solution, Microsoft indicated that the issues originated from a change made by a “third-party ISP (internet service provider)’s managed environment.”

After the ISP reversed their change, Microsoft observed signs of recovery.
