ESPN Names Mike Greenberg as Sam Ponder’s Successor for ‘NFL Sunday Countdown’
As it celebrates its 40th season, ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” is getting a fresh new format.
Following the recent dismissal of previous host Sam Ponder, ESPN revealed on Tuesday that Mike Greenberg would step in as the new host of “Sunday NFL Countdown.” This program serves as the network’s pre-game show leading up to Sunday NFL games.
Joining Greenberg will be analysts such as Tedy Bruschi, Randy Moss, Rex Ryan, and Alex Smith, along with NFL insider Adam Schefter. The show will also feature a team of NFL reporters in the field, including Jeff Darlington, Dan Graziano, Kimberley A. Martin, Sal Paolantonio, and Lindsey Thiry.
<p”The show originally premiered in 1985 under the name “NFL GameDay” and has gone through various changes since then. The season’s first episode will air on Sunday, September 8, coinciding with the first NFL Sunday. The series will conclude on February 9, 2025 in New Orleans, just before Super Bowl 59.
Each episode will continue to run for three hours, kicking off at 10 a.m. ET and leading directly into the 1 p.m. ET start of the games every Sunday.
For Greenberg, this role marks a significant addition to his NFL responsibilities at ESPN. He has previously hosted the NFL draft broadcasts and has been the face of the morning show “Get Up” since its inception in 2018. He now becomes the fourth person to host “Sunday NFL Countdown” in its 40-year history.
