Mindy Kaling to Host at Democratic National Convention: Key Details
Kaling will take on the master of ceremonies role on Wednesday at the DNC in Chicago.
Mindy Kaling is set to host a night at the Democratic National Convention as the latest star to join the lineup.
Kaling will follow in the footsteps of “Scandal” actor Tony Goldwyn and “The View” co-host Ana Navarro when she serves as the master of ceremonies on Wednesday in Chicago. The convention will conclude with Kerry Washington hosting the final night on Thursday, where Kamala Harris will officially accept the party’s presidential nomination.
The 45-year-old Kaling is among many celebrities supporting Vice President Harris’s candidacy after President Biden revealed in July he would not run for a second term. The DNC, mainly held at the United Center, has featured a mix of Hollywood stars and political leaders.
Prominent guest speakers this week include famous personalities such as basketball coach Steve Kerr and notable politicians like the Obamas, Clintons, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Here’s what you need to know about Kaling and her hosting role.
About Mindy Kaling
Kaling gained fame when she became the only female writer on “The Office” writing team at the age of 24 in 2004.
Since then, she has authored three books and created popular TV shows including “The Mindy Project,” “Never Have I Ever,” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.” Recently, she voiced the lead character in Max’s “Velma,” an animated adult spinoff of Scooby-Doo, for which she also acts as an executive producer.
Additionally, Kaling is a mother of three.
Kaling’s Previous Support for the Democratic Party
Kaling’s connection with Harris dates back to 2019 when they filmed a cooking segment together where they made masala dosa, a dish from South India.
In a playful moment during their cooking video, Kaling teased Harris, to which Harris, then a U.S. senator, replied, “I take it very seriously.”
Kaling co-chaired a fundraising event in 2020 alongside Reese Witherspoon that was organized by Harris to support Biden’s campaign. Earlier in March, she also hosted a fundraising event for Biden.
In 2023, Kaling was among those honored by Biden with a deferred 2021 National Humanities Medal and National Medal of Arts.
