MLB Revamps All-Star Game: Players to Sport Team Jerseys Instead of Special Uniforms

MLB Reverts to Team Jerseys for All-Star Game

Baseball fans have something to celebrate.

The MLB has declared that starting with the 2025 All-Star Game, players will don their team’s regular home and away uniforms instead of specially made All-Star uniforms.

For almost 100 years, players at the All-Star Game wore their traditional team uniforms based on the host team. When a National League team hosted, National League players wore their home jerseys, and similarly for the American League.

However, this tradition was disrupted in 2021 when the game took place in Colorado. MLB introduced unique uniforms for the event, which drew significant criticism from fans who appreciated the traditional representation of their teams. These special uniforms were used up until the 2024 game, which prompted mixed reactions from players and substantial scrutiny.

Starting with the upcoming All-Star Game at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, players will wear custom uniforms for their workout day and the Home Run Derby. Notably, those in the Home Run Derby will wear their home team jerseys. MLB also plans to create a distinctive hat for players for the All-Star Game.

MLB Announces Additional Uniform Updates

Furthermore, the league plans to revamp all team uniforms, focusing on updates to the new Nike vapor premier jersey. The new designs launched in 2024 faced considerable backlash for their look and feel, leading MLB to commit to making adjustments before the 2025 season begins.

MLB indicated that it conducted a league-wide survey to gather opinions on how to enhance the uniforms, leading to the following primary changes:

  • Player names will have larger lettering
  • Embroidered patches will be added to sleeves
  • Pants will be fully customizable

Due to manufacturing timelines, MLB mentioned that not all updates will be ready for the start of the 2025 season. However, road grey uniforms based on the 2023 design will be available for spring training, while all uniforms utilizing materials from the 2023 season are expected to be ready by the beginning of the 2026 season.
