Mother of Georgia Shooting Suspect Allegedly Informed School Prior to Incident, Report Reveals

Mother of Georgia shooting suspect claimed she reached out to the school before the incident, report states

WINDER, Ga. − The mother of a 14-year-old charged with killing four individuals at a rural high school in Georgia stated that she notified the school counselor about an “urgent emergency” and asked them to locate her son on the morning of the shooting, according to a report from the Washington Post on Saturday.

Law enforcement received reports of gunfire at Apalachee High School at approximately 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday. The tragic attack resulted in the deaths of two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, aged 39, and Cristina Irimie, aged 53, as well as two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, while nine others were injured. A call log reviewed by the Post reveals that Marcee Gray, the mother of the alleged shooter, made a 10-minute phone call to the school about half an hour before the shooting is thought to have begun.

“I was the one that alerted the school counselor at the high school,” Gray wrote in a text message to her sister, Annie Brown, as shown in a screenshot obtained by the Post. “I informed them it was an extreme emergency and urged them to immediately find [my son] and check on him.”

While Brown chose not to provide details about what led Gray to contact the school, Charles Polhamus, the suspect’s grandfather, shared with the New York Post that Gray hurried to Winder, around 50 miles northeast of Atlanta, after receiving a text from her son that said, “I’m sorry, mom.”

Both Brown and Polhamus refrained from commenting when they were contacted by YSL News. Gray and representatives from the Barrow County School System have not yet replied to requests for comments.

The 14-year-old suspect, Colt Gray, faces four counts of felony murder and is currently being detained at a juvenile facility without bond. His father, Colin Gray, aged 54, was also arraigned on Friday facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. Neither the father nor son entered a plea or requested bond during their hearings.
