Nancy Pelosi hospitalized following injury during trip to Europe
WASHINGTON – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been admitted to the hospital after getting injured while traveling in Luxembourg, as confirmed by a representative from her office.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving exceptional care from medical professionals,” said Ian Krager, a spokesperson for the California Democrat. “She is still actively working and regrets missing the remaining CODEL events that honor the bravery of our servicemembers during one of the most significant acts of heroism in American history.”
Pelosi was abroad with a congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
At 84, Pelosi has represented her district in Congress since 1987. She made history in 2002 as the first woman elected as the Democratic minority leader and again in 2007 when she became the first female House speaker, placing her second in the presidential line of succession.
After two decades at the forefront of House Democrats, Pelosi stepped down from leadership but continues to serve her San Francisco constituency. Her departure opened the door for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to take over as House minority leader.
Having won reelection in November, Pelosi is preparing to be sworn in for her 20th term in office next month.
Her hospitalization follows a recent injury sustained by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who suffered a sprained wrist and facial cuts after falling at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.
