Holiday Travel Costs Soar: Americans Adjust Their Plans Amid Rising Expenses
Travel expenses are climbing for many this holiday season.
An October survey conducted by Zubie, a rental fleet management firm, reveals that approximately one-third of Americans intend to travel more this winter compared to 2023. However, these travelers are facing higher costs for their outings.
A report from Squaremouth, a travel insurance platform, indicates that holiday travelers are spending over 50% more from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The average cost of a trip this year stands at roughly $5,861, marking a 25% increase from 2023.
Instead of avoiding travel to save money, many Americans are adjusting the types of trips they take. There’s a noticeable rise in multigenerational family vacations and group travels. Furthermore, some individuals are setting sights on “bucket list” locations, opting for fewer but more significant and extended trips.
Travel challenges, including severe weather conditions, flight disruptions, lost luggage, and rental car complications, are also driving up expenses. More travelers purchased insurance this year compared to last, and claims related to travel insurance have surged by 18% in 2024. Most of these claims stem from canceled trips, with medical emergencies and delays also being common issues.
