NFL MVP Rankings for Week 15: Josh Allen Outshines Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff
This week in the NFL, you might expect star quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff to dominate the conversation, especially after each of them threw five touchdown passes last Sunday.
However, there’s another player that has captured the league’s attention for this year’s MVP title after Week 15.
It’s unfortunate for Jackson, who is vying for his second consecutive MVP award and a total of three with the Ravens. Goff is also experiencing a career-best season with the NFC-leading Detroit Lions.
In the meantime, another talent has stepped forward with two of the season’s most impressive victories.
Check out the NFL MVP rankings from YSL News Sports after Week 15:
5. RB Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles, stock steady
This spot is reserved for a player from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts made an impact by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another during the Eagles’ 27-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, after previous games where he barely threw for 100 yards. Despite not having a standout game with just 74 total yards, Saquon Barkley remains the team’s top MVP candidate.
Barkley leads the league significantly with 1,964 rushing yards, almost 400 yards ahead of Derrick Henry in second place with 1,599. He also has 13 touchdowns this season, trailing only five players, including Hurts, who has utilized Barkley’s contributions to score 14 touchdowns in total.
4. QB Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, stock steady
Mahomes was involved in three touchdowns (two through the air and one via a handoff) in the Chiefs’ 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Although Kansas City boasts the best record in the NFL at 13-1, this win marked only their fourth this season by more than one score. The other nine victories were decided by small margins, which has negatively impacted Mahomes’ MVP discussions this year.
Mahomes’ performance has been consistent but not overwhelming; he ranks in the Top 10 with 22 touchdown passes (ninth) and 3,348 passing yards (tenth), although his QBR slipped to 11th at 64.6.
As the Chiefs look ahead after the Browns game, Mahomes will need to manage a high ankle sprain through the last three weeks of the regular season.
3. QB Jared Goff, Detroit Lions, stock down
Despite throwing five touchdown passes last week in an effort to revive the Lions’ season, Goff’s team faced their second loss of the year to the Bills.
Goff falls to the No. 3 position after being ranked No. 2 just a week prior, where he had helped secure a win against the Green Bay Packers with three touchdown passes.
Presently, Goff holds the second-best passer rating (110.4) and completion percentage (71.4) in the league, while his 30 touchdown passes rank him fourth among all quarterbacks.
Though the Lions are still leading the NFC playoff race, their injuries, such as the setback of running back David Montgomery (MCL), necessitate that Goff elevate his performance to bolster his MVP candidacy as the season unfolds.
2. QB Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens, stock up
Jackson regains the No. 2 ranking following his five-touchdown performance against the Giants.
Jackson and the Ravens previously took down the current top MVP candidate, but losses to the Chiefs, Raiders, Browns, Steelers, and Eagles have hindered his MVP prospects.
Leading the NFL, Jackson has a passer rating of 120.7, 34 touchdown passes—second only to Joe Burrow (36)—and a QBR of 76.0, putting him behind only the top-ranked player in these ratings.
The Ravens currently stand at 9-5, and Jackson has a critical opportunity to help his team reclaim the AFC North in an upcoming matchup against the division-leading Pittsburgh Steelers.
1. QB Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills, stock steady
In the recent game against the Lions, Allen scored two rushing touchdowns followed by two passing touchdowns.
Over the past two weeks, the Bills have accumulated 90 points, with Allen personally contributing to 10 touchdowns during this period. Remarkably, he made history by becoming the first player to record three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns in a single game last week.
Allen leads the NFL with a QBR of 79.3, ranks sixth with 25 touchdown passes, and also has 12 rushing touchdowns. He has three more games, including two against the Patriots, to further solidify his case for the MVP title.
The Bills have convincingly beaten both the Lions and Chiefs, the top teams in the NFC and the league respectively, which supports Allen’s argument for his first NFL MVP award.
