NHL This Week: Iconic Returns for Steven Stamkos and Marc-Andre Fleury
This week in the NHL brings us two significant comebacks—one of which will be the last—and the possibility of a new record.
Former Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos is returning to the city where he celebrated two Stanley Cup victories for the very first time since changing teams. He joined the Nashville Predators this summer after unable to agree to a new contract with the Lightning.
“I’m definitely feeling the excitement of being back in the city and in this arena where I’ve made so many wonderful memories over the years. I’m sure the emotions will come flooding back,” Stamkos mentioned to The Tennessean, part of the YSL News Network.
Then, on Tuesday evening, Minnesota Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will make a return to Pittsburgh. That’s where he was selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 draft and where he clinched three Stanley Cup titles.
This week could also see the emergence of an NHL record for the strongest start to a season.
Here’s a preview of the week ahead in the NHL:
Monday
Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning, 7:30 PM
Stamkos holds the record for most games, goals, and points in Lightning history, making him synonymous with the franchise. So far this season, he has scored just one goal over eight games with Nashville, while the energetic Predators, who began the season with an 0-5 record, have rallied to win their last three contests.
“The transition for my family has gone really well,” Stamkos said. “They’ve adapted better than I have, to be honest. We didn’t start the season in the best way, myself included. I thought the family adjustment would be tougher than the hockey change, but it has turned out to be the other way around.”
Jake Guentzel, who joined Tampa Bay as a free agent this summer, has accumulated seven points across eight games for the Lightning, who are currently 5-3.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Winnipeg Jets, 7:30 PM
The Jets are off to an undefeated 8-0 start this season and are pursuing the record for the longest winning streak to begin a season, held by the 1993-94 Maple Leafs and the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres at 10 games. If Winnipeg secures a victory on Monday, they can equal the record with a win on Wednesday in Detroit and surpass it with a win Friday in Columbus.
Tuesday
Minnesota Wild at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7 PM
Fleury is as much a legend in Pittsburgh as Stamkos is in Tampa Bay. He accomplished 375 of his 562 career wins (which is second in NHL history) while playing for the Penguins. Now in his 21st season, he has made it clear that this will be his last.
At 39 years old, Fleury anticipates a challenging emotional evening on Tuesday.
“As I get older, I feel like I might be a bit more emotional than I used to be,” he shared with reporters. “So I’ll probably take a deep breath, soak it all in. I have great memories here. I was lucky to play for so many years in this city.”
Friday and Saturday
Dallas Stars vs. Florida Panthers
The NHL is international once again, with a home-and-home series set in Tampere, Finland. The game on Friday starts at 2 PM ET, followed by a noon ET start on Saturday. Both matches will be broadcast on the NHL Network.
Several Finnish players will be showcased in these games, especially Panthers forward Aleksander Barkov, who made history as the first Finnish-born captain to lift the Stanley Cup. He has been sidelined due to a leg injury but is expected to make his return on Monday night.
Florida’s roster also includes Finnish players like Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, and Niko Mikkola, while Dallas features Roope Hintz, Miro Heiskanen, and Esa Lindell.
Both Hintz and Barkov hail from Tampere, and Barkov, Heiskanen, and Lindell have received invitations to join Finland’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Saturday
Maple Leafs at St. Louis Blues, 7 PM
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube is returning to St. Louis for the first time since his dismissal last season. He was instrumental in leading the Blues to their only Stanley Cup win in 2019. Last week, the Blues defeated the Maple Leafs decisively, 5-1, in Toronto.
