Nick Jonas Shares Insights on Fatherhood and Grief While Promoting ‘The Good Half’
In the film “The Good Half,” Nick Jonas portrays Renn, a young author who returns to Cleveland from Los Angeles for his mother’s funeral. Interestingly, in real life, he traveled back home to New Jersey to work on this project.
“It felt really fitting,” says 31-year-old Jonas to YSL News about shooting in New Jersey for his new film, which is now in theaters. Although he hails from Dallas, he grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey. “Being back in Jersey added an unexpected depth to the experience. There was a certain sadness to returning to my roots that I found beneficial for this film.”
Jonas expresses that it was wonderful to spend time with his older brother Kevin, 36, his wife Danielle, and their two daughters. Although he regularly sees Kevin and older brother Joe, 35, they were scheduled to perform on Joe’s birthday (August 15) before continuing their world tour, resuming on August 21 in Mexico City and concluding on October 16 in Poland.
Before all that, Jonas’s latest movie will have an expanded theatrical release this Friday. “The Good Half” features Brittany Snow, Matt Walsh, and David Arquette. Elisabeth Shue portrays Jonas’ character’s mother, whose passing prompts the characters to navigate their own struggles. Alexandra Shipp plays a fellow passenger that Jonas encounters on his flight home, who helps him confront the emotions he has been trying to sidestep.
Walsh takes on the role of Renn’s father. The discussions between the characters inspired Jonas to consider his own 2-year-old daughter, Malti Marie, whom he shares with his wife, Priyanka Chopra.
“Parenthood, even at this early phase of my daughter’s life, centers around these moments,” he notes, referencing a scene where Renn and his father Darren connect on a deeper level amid their sorrow. “(Renn’s) father is uncertain about what to say or how to behave, which is so genuine and relatable.”
“It mirrors the experience many of us face when trying to comfort someone. You often feel at a loss for words, fearful of saying something inappropriate, yet unsure of what may be right.”
Having various creative outlets is certainly beneficial, and the Jonas Brothers have multiple projects in the works. Kevin and the youngest sibling, Franklin, co-host ABC’s “Claim to Fame.” Joe is set to launch his solo album, “Music for People Who Believe in Love,” on October 18. Meanwhile, Nick will return to Broadway next March, starring alongside Adrienne Warren in “The Last Five Years.” Last on Broadway in 2012, Jonas describes this opportunity as “a dream come true.”
Regarding “The Good Half,” Jonas emphasizes that while the story is poignant, “it also contains elements of humor.”
“There’s no single correct way to deal with loss,” he comments. “Everyone experiences the grieving process differently. I believe audiences will relate to these characters and see parts of themselves in their stories, and recognizing that it’s okay to not be okay is a vital conversation to have.”
